Dr. Lindsay Sewell, his wife Jennifer, and their 8 adventurous children love spending time together and building memories with outdoor activities, sports, projects, and everyday family life. A few years ago, when the Sewell children were discussing future travel plans, Jennifer had the idea of not just traveling for fun, but to do so with a purpose of helping others. Dr. Sewell was at that time engaged in coursework for an MBA and had recently learned about non-profit/charitable organizations. He realized that the formation of a non-profit would be a good way to accomplish what the children and Jennifer were discussing: travel and make a difference. That is how the name Makadi was born: MAKe A DIfference.
PURPOSE
With nearly 20 years experience in prevention and treatment of skin cancer, Dr. Sewell has seen its devastating impact. Makadi was formed to help those that lack the financial resources and/or medical facilities to treat skin cancer. This became it’s first area focus, but it has since expanded. Dr. Sewell had already done some international skin cancer work in South Africa, so skin cancer was the perfect way to begin. As the idea of serving others and improving their health and happiness expanded, so too did the scope of Makadi. The tagline, “Find a need. Make a difference.” applies to so many facets of life. The Sewell family and others associated with Makadi know they cannot solve all the world’s problems….but they make a difference for some.

Charity Skin Cancer Treatment Locations
- In 2012, Dr. Sewell visited South Africa as part of a trip with the Blade and Light Society. He gave several skin cancer surgery lectures to students from the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine and then assisted his good friend and South African dermatolgist, Dr. Marc Roscher, and other South African physicians in performing skin cancer surgery on several patients.
- In 2014, Dr. Sewell visited the Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF) of South Africa’s Annual Meeting to assist medical students and residents in a skin surgery workshop. He again instructed medical students and other health care professionals in the technique of proper surgery.
- In 2017, Dr. Roscher invited Dr. Sewell to speak at the SCF’s Annual Meeting. The focus of the lecture was the use of hedgehog inhibitor medication to treat inoperable basal cell carcinomas, a type of skin cancer. Dr. Sewell then spent the day with Dr. Roscher at his free care clinic, the Triomf Clinic, in Pretoria, South Africa treating dozens of skin cancers and making plans for many others.
- In 2021, Dr. Sewell again lectured at the SCF’s annual meeting (virtually, this time, because of COVID-19 pandemic’s restriction on travel). The topic was again inoperable basal cell carcinomas but additionally pursued the surgical management of other types of skin cancer.
